In some structures, roofs are often left without any paint but in many roofs it is a familiar sight to see painting having been done on them. The use of roof paint is for many purposes. One of the purposes of using this paint is to achieve aesthetic looks for roofs. External paint is no longer just used on walls but it can also be found on roof spaces. For instance, it houses that are built in the tropics; it is common to come across roofs that are mostly painted white. This serves as, among other purposes, a means of aesthetically enhancing the appearances of roofs.

Speaking of white roof paint, in areas such as the tropics, this particular color of paint is used for its reflective properties. In areas such as these, high temperatures are noted almost all year round. High temperatures imply that air conditioning systems have to be used at all times for cooling and these systems are run on expensive energy costs. White paint on roofs is used with the purpose of reflective rays from the sun so that roofs do not absorb heat and release it into inner sections of structures. Consequently, the need for air conditioning is lessened and energy costs are reduced.

Roof paint is used to enhance the durability and longevity characteristics of roofs. Different kinds of roofs are prone to wear out over a long time of use. For instance, metal roofs are exposed to heat and cold conditions which cause changes in the form of expansion and contraction of the roofs. Continuous changes of this kind damage roofs thus reducing on their life span. Paint that is applied on roofs prevents damage of roofs due to harsh climatic conditions. The paint prevents cracking and peeling of roofs as they are used. The paint also works when patching up cracks that can extend and damage entire roofs.
